What if Allan never betrayed the gang? It's something that's been on my mind for a while now, and well I came to a startling conclusion:
In the grand scheme of things, quite a bit.
Allan's story wouldn't have as been as colorful if he hadn't betrayed the gang, he would have been just a cheeky, sometimes grumpy character-a funnier version of Will, practically. But he goes down so much deeper, maker him a far more likable character. His personal journey goes so far, he struggles with greed and good, like any human. And it brings the gang closer together, especially when they're all reunited, I'd imagined (even though Season Three barely brought up his betrayal).
But what about the big picture? In the end, Allan does help them find Marian and save the king, which he wouldn't be able to do if he was with Sheriff and Co., but if we go beyond that, even farther ahead, into Season Three, Allan's betrayal plays a huge role in his death. Much's exact lines were "You've done that before"
So what if he hadn't betrayed the gang? Well, Season Two would be a little shorter, Robin would have probably still heard of Marian and the King, saved them like the hero he always manages to be in the end. Allan is still a great hero, but he'd be without the victim character that makes him a fan favorite. And his death would absolutely not have happened.
